Timeline of Important Events In J.R.R. Tolkien's Life
1892- John Ronald Remuel Tolkien is born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, on January 3rd.

1902- Tolkien recieves a Foundation Scholarship to King Edward VI High School for boys.
1911- Tolkien recieves an Exhibition Scholarship to Oxford University.
1915- Tolkien achieves First Class Honors and recieves his B.A. from Exeter College, Oxford University

1915- He enlists as an officer with the Lancashire Fusiliers during World War I.
1916- He marries Edith Bratt on March 22nd and travels to France to fight at Somme.
1918- Tolkien begins work on the staff of the New English Dictionary.
1920- Tokien recieves appointment as Reader at the University of Leeds.
1922- Tolkien publishes a Middle English Vocabulary
1924- Tolkien is appointed Professor of English Language at The University of Leeds.
1925- Tolkien edits and publishes Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. He becomes Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University.
1937- The Hobbit: Or, There and Back Again is published.
1945- Tolkien is appointed Merton Professor of English Language and Literature at Oxford University.
1954-1955- The Lord of The Rings is published in three volumes.
1957- Tolkien is awarded the International Fantasy Award for The Lord of the Rings.
1971- Tolkien's wife, Edith, dies.
